=head1 TITLE Cars should get better gas mileage =head1 VERSION Maintainer: Marb Groddinus <mjd@perl.com> Date: 28 Aug 2000 Version: 1 Mailing List: perl6-auto Number: 163 =head1 ABSTRACT Fuel is a precious and non-replaceable resource. Millions of gallons of petroleum are consumed annually by automobiles. If the automobiles were more fuel-efficient, then oil could be saved for use by future generations. Such cars would also be less expensive to operate because fuel costs could be saved. =head1 DESCRIPTION Fuel efficiency is usually measured in miles per gallon. This measures the number of miles that can be driven in the vehicle for each gallon of fuel consumed. For example, a car which has a fuel efficiency of 20 miles per gallon (mi/gal) can be driven twenty miles for each gallon of fuel consumed. A car which has a fuel efficiency of 30 mi/gal can be driven 50% farther for the same cost, a clear improvement. I propose that all cars, trucks, and other automobiles should get two hundred miles per gallon. Existing cars get at most 40 miles per gallon, so my proposal would result in an 80% gasoline savings over the current situation. Even in the best case, current motorcycles only get operate with fuel efficincies of 70 mi/gal, so my proposal would certainly cut fuel costs to at least 1/3 of their current levels. =head1 IMPLEMENTATION I confess that I'm not an expert in how cars work. Nevertheless, I'll go out on a limb and assert that this will be relatively easy to implement, with relatively few entangling side-issues. =head1 REFERENCES RFC 87: "Flying Cars" RFC 101: "Cars should run on water instead of gasoline" RFC 122: "Flying Submarine Cars" Mark-Jason Dominus mjd@plover.com I am boycotting Amazon.
