I'm not ruling out problems, although I managed to FTP download this
distribution and successfully unpack and untar it both on Windows and
later on my Mac. But NOT from every CPAN site, mind you.

The *.bin files in the "maps" folder aren't MacBinary files at all. You'll
also note the various 'map'-related utilities, such as 'map8_bin2txt'.
