If I understood Brian's question, he wanted a technical description of
what goes on under the hood, so I tried to give that, but provided a
little more.  I left this part out, David, and it probably should appear
someplace.

To be fair this should also be documented (it has been awhile since I've
reviewed the documentation) but people tend not to read that kind of
thing anyway.

(Also, a perl filter can be executed from anywhere if you do so via
applescript.  To execute them from the UI, they need to appear here, and
that is the general case.)
