Oh, and I think this is MacX's behavior, to eat all the cpu possible.
When I run the perltool with macX running, perl seems to get no cycles.
I switched to another X client (White Pine eXodus, demo available from
their web page at wpine.com), and the perl slowness went away.

Telnet is another option.  --ed
