[MacPerl] accessing files across a network

Please excuse me if this question has been posed before:

I am trying to access a file over a network. Say, for instance, that I
already have logged into a server using the chooser and its icon is on
the desktop. Say there is a file on that server that my MacPerl script
needs to access. Say the server's name is FileServer. Say the file I need
to access is pesky.txt and is in the directory "directory" on FileServer.

Is the path to the file "FileServer:directory:pesky.txt"?

I ask because that does not seem to work. MacPerl appears to say that the
path doesn't exist. Am I missing something? Does it matter if FileServer is
a PC? Is there some sort of networking command I need to perform.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.
