[MacPerl] DBM on macs

hello everyone,
my question is a little in the dark.
i'm just now beginning to read and try to understand what perl can do with
respect to databases.  i'm interested in setting up some scripts on my mac
to access a database, all of which will someday live on a unix server.
SO..., i was hoping someone out there might be able to point me in the
right direction for some DBM material (editors etc.) .  Thanks you any
advice...
