worked nicely for me except that it thinks $#varname has a comment in it
i replaced
    $q =~ s/\#.*?$//g; # remove Perl-style comments
with
    $q =~ s/[^\$]\#.*?$//g; # remove Perl-style comments, but not $#varname
and my formatting works better, but haven't thought about whether it creates some other new problem ....
