True enough, and I use Emacs Perl mode all the time, but remember that ultimately they had to change Perl so that Emacs could do the right thing. We no longer say, for example, Net'FTP, but Net::FTP. I believe this was done solely (or maybe just largely?) so that Emacs' Perl parser would have an easier time. It was quite a problem with Perl 4. I also like Alpha's Perl mode. Colorized keywords *and* Perl 5.
