This issue clearly needs more investigation from me. However, I think it has
had its share of discussion on the list by now, so could I ask all of you to
close the debate for a while?

Yes, your C example pretty much shoots down the entire file system argument.

As much as I've been wrong before on this issue, I'll predict that this
hypothesis is also wrong. MacPerl (the released versions) uses the exact same
Metrowerks stdio library as your example.
