Re: [MacPerl] MacPerl future short & long-term

To answer to two recent threads of discussion:

As you might have noticed, the 5.004 based MacPerl has been delayed, primarily
because I found more memory leaks than I expected and because I had to get new
releases of GUSI, dbm, and sfio out the door. The latter issues have more or
less been settled, the former only partially so. Expect a release in late July.

It seems that since my January position statement, enough people have joined
the list that the Rhapsody discussion started anew, so let me repeat what I
said then:

 - MacPerl for MacOS will be maintained for a while, though it remains to be
   seen with what intensity.
 - I expect the standard perl distribution to build out of the box on Rhapsody,
so there will not be a specially packaged Rhapsody distribution.
 - Mac specific work on Rhapsody Perl will include:
   - Contributing whatever patches are necessary for Rhapsody to the standard
     distribution.
   - Porting toolbox modules (which will be rolled into CPAN).
   - Maintaining binaries for people who don't want to compile themselves.
   - Hooking up to whatever interfaces Rhapsody provides for scripting
     languages.
