higher version numbers being broken in the same way as lower ones, with
working ones in between.

There isn't actually a working version, but...

1.2 is the Grand Unification, which is broken in ways which developers know
how to work around.  One of the old families was broken the same way.

And the free-standing library isn't needed with MacOS 8.
