  The "TechTool" program *deletes* the desktop database and this forces
  the Finder to _completely_ rebuild it. This is more thorough than the
  hold-command-and-option-at-mount-time rebuild.  I use it.  It works.

  TechTool is available in freeware or commercial versions:
