|1 - There seems to be no direct help reference to the "here" construct. I'm not sure what you mean by "direct help reference", but if you look in perldata.pod, about half-way down, there's a fairly thorough discussion of here-docs. Among other things, it says (emphasis added): "The terminating string must appear by itself (unquoted and "with no surrounding whitespace*) on the terminating line." This goes out to anyone new to perl: read the pods! Then read them again. Yes, read all of them, straight through, before you do any real major perl programming. It will all be much easier if you do.
