Re: [MacPerl] rcp using MacPerl?

I_didn%27t_know_this_was_going_to_be_a_controversial_question%2E

1. RCP is the recommended means of transferring files at this ISP. I am not trying to pull one over on them. I originally transferred all 150 megabytes of files using rcp, as they recommended that I do, and it worked fine. But that was from Unix to Unix.

2. Spaces are not hurting anything once they are on the server. The ftp server in use at the ISP has a security flaw involving spaces and other special characters. Once on the server, spaces are fine.

3. I looked at CPAN and couldn't find any tool for doing what I need; I assume that this is because the tool comes built into Unix; I'd hoped that someone on the Mac had already solved the problem.

4. I have thousands of files on-line, and run through thousands of hits a day. Most of these hits are on the text files that I upload. I use the automatic directory indexing of Apache to list these files. I could certainly write my own CGI to list the files, but that would appear to be a waste of CPU time on the server given that Apache already does this just fine.

5. I would never print a list with underscores between the words, and I'm not about to publish lists on the web which do that. In my opinion it is unprofessional and harder to read.

If you know of a solution, I'm sure it would be of general interest to the list if it involves Perl. If you would like to discuss the ramifications of using spaces on Unix, or the aesthetic superiority (or lack thereof) of spaces over underscores in desktop publishing, please write me privately.

"It's too bad we don't have a can to listen to to get back to San Diego," said Voniece. "What do we make in San Diego, anyway?"
"Tourists, I think," said Arthur. He brightened. "Do they sell tourists in cans?"
"I think they do," said Voniece, "but they're awfully expensive."
