[MacPerl] Redirecting I/O in a MacPerl Extension?

I'd like to use Perl scripts as Word Services servers (see
<http://www.wordservices.org>). Available servers include Excalibur,
Spellswell, and Sans-Faute/Grammair. Clients I know are Tex-Edit Plus
and Eudora -- and I'm working on a contextual menu plugin that applies
a WS to the selected text.

I've played around a bit with Mac::AppleEvents and while it appears to
be possible to do the WS protocol handling entirely in MacPerl I'd
prefer to write a MacPerl Extension (like Droplet and CGI) that wraps
around a vanilla perl script. I figured there had to be a way to
redirect stdin/stdout and had a look at MPCGI.c, but I don't get how it
works. Can anyone explain this to me?

Thanks,
Michael
