MacPerl *already* supports the use of 8-bit characters in scripts. I recall having a small battle with Chris about the use of these in the MacPerl book. We compromised with the <"Funny Characters" vs. Octal Notation> section, found on page 143. Chris is still opting for cuteness and convenience; I'm still arguing for portability. (TMTOWTDI :-) -r P.S. (Mac)JPerl uses 8-bit bytes AND byte pairs, as I understand it, to handle Japanese characters. No portability, but very handy...
