But I do remember that when I needed something more (I have a project to write my own mail-reader (ok, I know, this is silly, but this project actually is several years old and used several different programming languages up to now ;- ) ), there were a few problems with MacPerls GUI-kit. Things like a more powerfull text-editor (waste?) come to mind ... But it definitely was useable. It is a bit more than just Toolbox calls, Matthias did build a nice and lightwight OO-framework around the Toolbox. My main problem was that there is no prototyping tool, so you have to create everything in text-form. That's a bit clumsy sometimes.
