There are still problems with Compress::Zlib, but it appears they only happen when reading from a file descriptor and messing with the file pointer. e.g., one of the tests reads a small bit of data, then tries to perform gzip functions from that point on. If you start at the beginning of the file, it works OK. I wanted to figure it out before releasing it. Not enough tuits.
