Any application (which will respond properly to an unknown event:  that is
silently return the errAEEventNotHandled error <spelling may be off> )can
be the target of an event which will trigger a Scripting Addition.  Finder
is handy, but not necessary.

tell application "Microsoft Excel" to beep 2

should do the same job as

tell application "Finder" to beep 2
