[MacPerl] multithreading?

I'm interested in tying a data manager script i wrote to a client for
compuserve that would be used in a mud there.  I can't think of how a
program could function well without having separate forks for reading
and writing (multithreading).  Is there any way to do this or to
effectively emulate this with MacPerl 5?
