In the days of Stuffit 1.5(.1), when it was Raymond Lau's shareware
and not Aladdin's commercial product (with shareware subsets), the
file format and algorithm was documented, and a Unix unstuffer was
available in source code.

You won't find many 1.5.1 files around any more, unless you're the one 
creating them.  In which case, you might as well create them in a
format like .zip or .tar.gz, using more modern and portable
compression algorithms and formats.
