What I meant by realtime access is where Perl could send to a MIDI device /individual/ MIDI commands, whenever it wanted -- instead of writing out a whole (finite) song and then having something start playing it. That way you could do things like a real-time composition system, where a MacPerl program changes the music as you move your mouse. That'd require a realtime connection between the program and the MIDI port (or software sequencer).
