Well, MacPerl has to load in the shared libraries, and then compile and execute the perl code in the modules, and then compile and execute the program. And in the case of the modules, you could have 6 or more GUI modules that MacPerl has to compile each time. I imagine that Perl/Tk stuff takes a similarly long time to start up each time on a comparable box. As to speed, it seems to me slightly slower than, say, most X window managers, but not as fast as a compiled app in Mac OS.
