I bought it just over a year ago, and got about 100 pages into it before my eyes rolled back into my head and I went into a fugue state. I would NOT recommend this book for novices - unless you're a "novice" programmer. I would hardly consider this an "introductory" book for laypeople. I also bought "PERL for Dummies" (Dummies series) and found that it brought the concepts of PERL down to my (novice) level, but was not the best at _teaching_ me PERL. Sold that one, too. I can appreciate what you're saying, though.
