As far as perl books go, I feel I should echo TomC's recommendation of Perl, The Programmer's Companion, by Nigel Chapman. Not for total beginners, but well written and a fairly fun read (and it credits MacPerl as his platform of development for the scripts in the book). As I say, not for people who've never looked at a computer before, but it might be a good followup to MPPE. Haven't really thought about it in those terms, but I think it could work that way.
