I figured this out entirely by accident (as always). The files that I am trying to open with MacPerl contain a link to an external style sheet on my client's server that has been moved. Altho I don't quite understand why, it appears that even tho the html files can be opened directly absent the style sheet, Perl does not like this at all and choked down trying to find it.
