[MacPerl] MacPerl and other apps

Is there a way to send a string to MacPerl and have it point the print 
statements to the "result" of an appleEvent?

For example, 

tell application "MacPerl"
	copy (Do Script "print 4+3;") to x
	x
end tell

where x would return the result of the print statement?
