Thank you all for the helpful advice and counsel on PGPLOT.

I was glad to hear from Paul S. that I am not going crazy (at least over 
F77 and C) and I have already grabbed GIFgraph from CPAN. After I figure 
out how to install it correctly I'll give it a go.
