In my opinion, it's well worth the $50 for the book & CD, particularly if you are new to Linux. You also get a coupon for a free upgrade when the next version is released. On the other hand, you don't have to download everything to install. You'd probably be best off joining the MkLinux-setup list and asking such questions there. If you want to run a script written in MacPerl on Unix, just use something like BBEdit to convert Mac to Unix line breaks and bear in mind that Unix is case-sensitive. My brain hurts!
