I've used mkLinux as an alternate OS on an 8100 to one degree or another for quite a while now and enjoy playing with/in it. The book is okay, but devotes an inordinate amount of attention to a discussion of Mac hardware architecture and not that much to the nuts and bolts of actually using Linux to do anything useful. For that side of things, I recommend "Running Linux" which is published by O'Reilly and gives a pretty good orientation. >BTW, I haven't gone looking for one yet, but is there a script out there >that will convert MacPerl scripts to regular perl scripts? As others have mentioned, a MacPerl script should run on linux without much change if it was written in anticipation of doing so (meaning it doesn't use any special Mac Perl modules, you used #!/usr/bin/perl on the first line, figured out some way to identify the OS and modify file paths, etc.).
