There is perhaps more information here than you are looking for, but it is a simplification. FreeBSD does not run on Macs. It is a free, open source BSD-based Unix for PC-compatible computers (and Alpha and Sparc, sort of). FreeBSD does not run concurrently with other PC-based operating systems without very special arrangements. OpenBSD and NetBSD run on certain Macs. They are free, open source BSD-based Unices that run on multiple platforms. They do not run concurrently with the Mac OS. MachTen does run on Macs. It is a costly, closed source BSD-based Unix for Mac-compatible computers. It runs as a process under Mac OS. Mac oS X Server runs on certain Macs. It is a costly, somewhat open source BSD-based Unix. It runs Mac OS as a Unix process. I use OpenBSD, MachTen, and Mac OS X Server. OpenBSD is my preferred pure Unix, and Mac OS X Server is my preferred blend of Unix and Mac. MachTen, to me, doesn't seem so glamorous now that OS X is available. Hope this helps.
