actually, it's been done.  Kevin Reid did this a few months back (and it 
passed completely without notice):

It's there in the YourMines game.  You can see the progress bar in action 
(and much else), and view the code (and even reuse it in your own 
program), although Kevin would not look very kindly on you distributing 
modified versions of the game.
