There's a function in Mac::Conversions that answers just that 
question.  It isn't 100% reliable (can't be, basically) but it should 
work almost all of the time.  Mac::Conversions->is_macbinary($path). 
I added it after Arved ran into the same problem with one of the XML 
modules.
