Bad code exists. We all know it. But do we really need to seem elitist? Maybe this guy asked for it, who knows, but the FWP list sitting around inflating their egos by dissing this guy's code doesn't strike me as very mature. We're professionals, people. We know our stuff. Lots of people aren't as good as we are; we should either stay quiet or offer help, not ridicule. This guy fills a niche somewhere and that's cool. So far as Perl's image goes, though, we're doing a lot more harm by trashing this guy than this guy is by writing ugly code. It's one thing to look at bad code and shake your head in puzzlement; it's another to tear into it in a public forum. And as someone else pointed out, there's code nearly as bad, if not worse, on our beloved CPAN. Live and let live :) Just let it go. Actually I think some people might even owe this guy an apology, even if he didn't read their comments on his code. But let's let it rest and get on to more fun things, shall we? My two cents.
