"signal to noise" is a very subjective term.  (E.g., I consider all
MacPerl5 and CGI information "noise", at the moment anyway.)  I would
prefer a newsgroup since the newsreaders I have available are more
powerful at filtering than my email reader.

And mailing lists are certainly subject to spamming!  We've just been
lucky to not be hit, yet.
