Thanks to a number of people who point out that to abbreviate the following...

>>        adex
>>        afgx
>>        ahix

...I'm correct that the following does not work.

>>        /a[(bc)(de)(fg)(hi)]x/

However, the following does work (as I've now confirmed).

>/a(bc|de|fg|hi)x/
