The usual things on a Mac:

1) Run Disk First Aid or equivalent. You should be in the habit of doing this
   regularly.

2) Rebuild your desktop.

3) Get a copy of TechTool from one of the Info-Mac archives and see what that
says. It may not be very helpful, but it might pick up possible problems,
and it makes rebuilding the desktop easy.

4) Upgrade your MacPerl. The current version is 5.10r2.

5) Get a copy of MacsBug from one of Apple's software sites and install it.
This gives you some chance of figuring out what actually went wrong.

Longer term...

1) Consider upgrading to 7.6 next month. I've been regularly upgrading as new
Systems come out since my Powerbook 165 replaced my Mac Plus, and they seem
to fix more than they break.

2) If you have the ability to back up your drive(s), back up, reformat, and
restore. I did that once when I started having trouble, and it did help.

None of these are guaranteed to work, of course. With MacOS, I've found
diagnosing problems to be more art than science. It's more a matter of
trying something and hoping it works rather than diagnosis.
