Sorry for the self-answer.

I cleverly listed the *machine* name, not the *owner* name, which is
'STR ' resource id -16096

And Chris Nandor wisely points out the better way:
$ENV{USER}

I managed to make that mistake whilst reading the book.  Sigh!
