Alternative 2B: I think this should work, unless there's something else
already in there.

Alternative 3: I like to put some code in my droplets that opens a 'select
file' dialog if no files are dropped. A simple instruction like 'select a
gif file for encoding' can be added to the dialog, without having to
explain in text how the system works. I personally think your idea is far
cooler, but this does work as an alternative.
