[MacPerl] How to run script when...?

Hi,

I have a script that ftps a file to a web site and I'd like to do one of
two things:

1. Have the script recognize or launch when a file it put into a shared
folder (drop box) and automatically upload,
-or-
2. Launch the script at regular intervals to check the folder and see if
there is something to ftp.

Any suggestions. Thanks for your help!
