[MacPerl] Creator Codes - whoo hooo

I was wondering if it was possible with perl or Macperl, to query files
created with macOS and get the creator code that is embeded somewhere in the
Mac file. The "author" code is the part that i'm interested in, the 2
character code that tells the Mac what software created the file. That way i
could handle file conversions much easier, i could write a script that would
do all the neat things i want it to do to change my files into a mac
plateform. My script can be ran on UNIX, MACOS or WINDOWS(*gasp*) so any
suggestion is welcome. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also... i
wouldn't mind finding somewhere, a list of creator codes and such. if any
of you know where this avaiable.... i would really appreciate it. I'm
relatively new the macperl world.. so if my question seems too simple or
something... I won't be insulted if you direct me to the proper place for my
queery.

Thank you very much,
