I forgot to mention 3: make sure that you have your ENV vars set, like EDITOR
and HOME and TMPDIR and PERL5LIB.  From my Perl file in Startup Items:

Set MACPERL  'Bird:MacPerl Ä:'
	Export MACPERL        # The path to the MacPerl libraries and
                              # documentation
Set PERL5LIB "{MACPERL}site_perl:MacPPC,{MACPERL}site_perl,{MACPERL}lib"
 	Export PERL5LIB       # The path to the MacPerl libraries
Set TMPDIR "Bourque:Temporary Items:"
 	Export TMPDIR
Set EDITOR "R*ch"
 	Export EDITOR
Set HOME "Bourque:System Folder:Preferences:"
 	Export HOME

Also a good idea to put the same stuff in the StartupTS file in the
ToolServer folder.
