Actually running Linux on the Mac requires that you partition your hard disk, or install a second hard disk soley for Linux. Both OS's act as the "real" OS, although it requires a MacOS extension (BootX) to make the MacOS cooperate. Of course several Linux distros are available: MkLinux: <http://www.mklinux.apple.com/> Now unsupported by Apple, and it looks like Apple hasn't done any development work in over a year. However, there's a strong user community: <http://www.mklinux.org/> and there's the great book out, "MkLinux: Microkernel Linux for the Power Macintosh": <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1881957241/qid%3D923849500/002-0976 459-2118205> from this little outfit no one *here* has ever heard from ;-): <http://www.ptf.com/> I think maybe they've done a book on MacPerl too. That said, if you Mac isn't one of those supported by MkLinux, you might try LinuxPPC: <http://www.linuxppc.org/> <-- Community support <http://www.linuxppc.com/> <-- Corporate and Retail sales If you buy the LinuxPPC CD-ROM, you also get MkLinux (great deal!) Owners of 68K Macs should not lose hope. There's always Linux/m68k for Mac: <http://www.mac.linux-m68k.org/> Also, if you have a 68K Mac, and can stand running a older version of the Linux kernal, you can run Debian GNU/Linux: <http://www.debian.org/ports/m68k/> And there's an *unofficial* port of RedHat 5.1 (Not Supported by RedHat!): <ftp://sunsite.auc.dk/projects/680x0/redhat/> RedHat does sell a "rough cuts" CD set ($29.95), but unfortunately no Mac installers for Linux/m68k. <https://www.redhat.com/commerce/store.cgi?page=/more_rh_roughcut.html> Uh, it's an embarrassment of riches! We now return you to your regularly scheduled MacPerl discussion! --B Brian McNett, Webmaster ************************************************************* Mycoinfo.
