Of course, maintainability is important (Perl is not the first programming language I learn [Basic, Assembler, Pascal, Logo, Lisp, Javascript and AppleScript have left their marks on me]. But sure Perl is really fascinating in its compactness and versatility. Especially its regular expressions and powers of pattern analysis/replacement now deserve some more of my time.
