This is dangerous. I sometimes find filenames containing the DEL character, often produced by users in a file-save-as dialog. Older programs just don't apply the DEL char but rather keep it invisible in the file's name. Strange but real. Sorry - I can't much contribute to the much more tricky questions of the UTF module.
