I should mention what the problem is, in case someone else has a 
chance to look into it or is seeing the same thing.  You can install 
a single module, and that usually works.  But the next one you try to 
install in the same instance of CPAN won't:

Note the mangled path.  If I now quit and restart CPAN, URI will 
install but the next thing I try won't.

Also, I can't be sure that File::Spec is the culprit (that line in 
MM_Mac OS is right after an Archive::Tar::_munge_file call), but this 
problem seemed to start about the time I was trying and backing out 
the various File-Spec distributions that had 5.005'isms in them.
